Shooting Sports

Cole Canoe Base offers a comprehensive shooting sports program for boy scouts and venturers. Safety is our number one priority, and we have certified and trained instructors at each range to serve as the qualified supervision and to answer any questions you may have. From the archery, rifle and shotgun merit badges to the shooting sports elective for venturers, we welcome you to come down to compete in one of our many competitions or visit with the staff and shoot for fun. The Frank DeDene Archery range has 17 covered shooting positions and an assortment of bows to fit the needs of your archers. In addition to the archery merit badge, the archery staff hosts a variety of special programs and competitions, including the poker shoot, moving targets, and high score of the week.

The Otto F. Kamman Shotgun range has a double thrower to accommodate two shooters at a time and is essentially a modified trap range. Each shooter works side-by-side with a staff coach to assist them with their shooting technique and fundamentals. The merit badge is offered twice daily in two hour time blocks. Cole uses semi-automatic 12 gauge shotguns for all shotgun shooting activities. Special events include the Tuesday evening Scoutmaster/SPL shoot and the Friday morning Sporting Clays Competition. Six additional box stands are used to make the sproting clays course both fun and challenging.

The Rifle range has 18 positions available for prone shooting; benchrests are available upon request. The firearms used are all bolt action, single shot .22 caliber sporting rifles. Scopes and aperture sights are available. Tuesday evening is the camp-wide Open Shoot, Thursday evening is reserved for .50 caliber muzzleloading rifles, and Friday morning is the Adult Leader high score competition.

Specifically for venturers, CCB has a high power rifle range where the targets are set up at 50 and 100 yards for .308 or .223 rifles, and it also doubles as the Pistol range. Revolvers and semi-automatic handguns of varying calibers have been used. These events are by appointment only because the high power range is about a mile away from base camp and camp vans are used for transportation. Venturers can work to achieve the Venturing Shooting Sports Elective in the disciplines of Archery, Rifle, Shotgun, or (by special appointment) Pistol.

All of our shooting sports activities are under strict, competent and when neccesary, certified supervision. We'd love for you to come out and experience the excitement for yourself!
